Following
a 35 day partial shutdown of the government President Donald Trump relented and
called for an end of the holdout since the Democrats, headed by Congressional
House Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, shunned any
negotiation or compromise on security or construction of a wall on the southern
border.
Putting the nation’s
interest first the President exercised the statesman position and did the right
thing by temporally ending the shutdown. Gleefully both Pelosi and Schumer
predictably hit the news channels claiming victory.
But
their “victory” may be short lived. As part of his decision Trump warned ending
the shutdown is effective only until February 15, 2019. If the Democrats refuse
to engage in good faith negotiation then it’s back to the drawing board and could
include another partial shutdown.
The big sticker is
funding for a southern border wall, or whatever the Democrats want to call it.
One thing for sure, Customs, Border Patrol and Immigration Customs Enforcement
(ICE) want some type of physical barrier. And the Democrat leader’s position is
hypocritical at best. Just about every one of these folks, including Pelosi and
Schumer had voted for such a wall in the past. But since it is President Trump
who continues to push for the construction of a security wall they object
ignoring the safety of the American people. So, the clock continues to click
and the deadline given by Trump is rapidly approaching.
Hypothetically,
if Pelosi and Schumer continue to ignore the President’s plea for funding what
will happen? Will Trump call for another partial shutdown or call for some
other action? If they think they can pull off another “victory” both leaders can
forget it! Donald Trump is not renowned for giving up; anyone making such a
mistake as thinking they have him over a barrel needs to look at his history.
It
seems Pelosi and Schumer’s hatred—and this is a real hatred, of the President
is greater than their love of country. While the shutdown was in effect Pelosi
joined other Democrat House members for a week-long jaunt to Porto Rico, paid
by lobbyists, while sunning themselves on the warm sandy beach and drinking
cocktails. Following this Pelosi immediately flew to Hawaii for another week
vacation while federal workers languished. Most of this was on the American
taxpayer’s dime.
Returning
to Washington she was queried about border wall negotiation and magnanimously
said she would vote for “one dollar” towards construction. And this seems to be
her current position as well. How this will influence the bi-partisan
commission now meeting in an effort to come to a fair compromise is yet to be
seen. Listening to some Democrat members it seems likely there will continue to
be a stalemate. And this is where President Trump will win the battle.
Another
shutdown is highly unlikely. And as far as declaring a national emergency this
is also unlikely. What then can Trump do? No one knows for sure but you can bet
your bottom dollar he has a plan. Meeting recently with Senator Lindsey Graham,
(R-SC), it is apparent something is in the works. Trump has announced that if
the bi-partisan group fails to come to an agreement that includes funding for
the wall, they “are wasting their time” he said. He also said that there is
current construction going on at the southern border and it will continue one
way or the other.
As
for Pelosi and Schumer the ball is squarely in their court. If both the House
and Senate Democrats continue to obstruct they may be looking for new jobs in
two years. The American people are fed up with the “progressive” position taken
by the Democrats and want both parties to work for what is best for the people.
Unfortunately this isn’t happening—again it is hatred of the President rather
what is best for the country.
And to top it all off
many of the new Democrats who won election are Socialists. They now call the
Democrat Party “Socialist Democrats.” Looking back in history there was another
party called “Socialist Democrats.” They later shortened the label to “Nazi”.
It
is a sad time in American history. There was a time when both the Congress and
Senate worked together. There was a time when both Democrats and Republicans
debated, compromised and worked in the best interest of the American people.
Not so today. And it is all because an outsider—not the classic politician, who
was elected to lead the country to economic security and protection of the
homeland. Trump’s biggest mistake it seems is that he has proven he keeps his
promises. He was elected to fulfill his promises and in addition “drain the
swamp.” These promises endanger the professional hand shakers who have made a
comfortable living sucking off the public nipple for years and accomplishing
little. What it really comes down to is power. That is the name of the game,
and a game it is!
Seriously
speaking can anyone really name one true statesman on the Democrat side?
